About the Atlantic Canadian Irish Dance Championships

On April 2 & 3, 2022, a brand new Irish dance experience will come to Halifax: the Atlantic Canadian Irish Dance Championships (ACIDC). The championships will consist of two Irish dance competitions, or feiseanna (pronounced fesh-ah-nah) — an Irish term for festivals or gatherings.

Feiseanna are the primary way Irish dancers advance and measure progress and are a necessary component of the dance style. Dancers compete according to their level but also their age and individual dance. Irish dance feiseanna are judged by qualified adjudicators and accompanied by live music. However, until recently, very few feiseanna were held in Atlantic Canada. Not many years ago there was only one opportunity in the area every four years. More recently, two have been offered in one year. This is an incredible leap but still leaves Atlantic Canada far behind the rest of the country and Irish dance world. In order to offer local dancers similar training and opportunities, more events must be hosted.

By running the ACIDC, the number of opportunities for local dancers will double. Additionally, dancers from across North America will travel to Halifax to attend and compete. The costs associated with putting on an event of this calibre in Halifax are high, but we know it's worth it.

Thank you for your contributions to Irish dancers and the growth of talent in Atlantic Canada!
